Many former Bitcoin holders have stories about the BTC they once held and lost. This makes the case out of New York involving the anonymous plaintiff "Noah Doe" all the more curious, and considerably more audacious.

On May 1, 2026, Noah Doe filed a 901-page complaint in the Supreme Court of New York with a singular aim: to exploit a legal loophole to claim over 39,069 long-dormant Bitcoin wallets holding roughly 3.79 million BTC. At today's prices, that's worth nearly $285 billion.

Under New York Personal Property Law Article 7-B, if you find lost physical property and report it to the police, you can legally claim it within a specified time frame. Noah Doe claims they did exactly that, after building an algorithm to scan the blockchain and identify 42,001 wallets fitting an "abandoned" profile. Of those, 424 wallets took on-chain action to prove they weren't abandoned and were removed from the suit. The remaining 39,069 were deemed fair game.

The legal argument is where it gets genuinely creative. Article 7-B requires property worth $5,000 or more to sit unclaimed for three-plus years before someone else can claim it. Doe only waited 19 months. The workaround: Doe's lawyers argue that the USB drives containing references to the wallets, not the Bitcoin itself, are the property being valued under the statute. The drives went to the NYPD, came back to Doe, and therefore, per paragraph 51 of the complaint, title has vested.

If that sounds like a stretch, it is. But it's also moot. Even if a judge entertained the argument, Doe has no private keys to access the wallets. There is no backdoor, no court order that bends the code, no forgot-password button for $285 billion in Bitcoin. Satoshi Nakamoto designed it that way on purpose.

The Bitcoin stays exactly where it is.
